My mother is one of those absolutely amazing women who seems to have an endless amount of energy, unbounded talent, and a strong sense of self. I honestly think there's not a question on the planet that she would be unable to answer and I cherish her level-headed, optimistic advice more than any one else's.
I have learned so much from my mother. Besides the basics of being a fully functioning human being, there are so many little tibdits of information I've picked up from her that have come in handy more times than I can count. Here is a list of 22 things my mother has taught me, one for each year of my life, compiled as a sort of catalogue of her awesomeness.
1. NEVER forget to write a thank you note. A real one.
2. Always brush your hair and always brush it from the bottom up.
3. Grow your own herbs.
4. Never underestimate the power of ironing your shirt.
5. Make your own marinara sauce and salad dressing.
6. Dogs can have Benadryl and Pepto-Bismol
7. It could always use a little more salt.
8. Your should never go see your boyfriend without makeup.
9. At the very least, put on a little blush.
10. ALWAYS help clean up after dinner regardless of where you are and who you are with.
11. NEVER show up empty-handed. Its better to be the only one who brought something than the only one who didn't.
12. If you're hungry, grab an apple.
13. Always wear a belt (especially when you have no hips...)
14. Be dependable. My mother is never late, she has never cancelled plans, and she never says no when it matters.
15. Laugh at yourself.
16. Something green with dinner.
17. Call your mama {this is the voicemail she leaves whenever I haven't talked to her in a few days, just 3 words}
18. For some things, name brand matters {Hunts, for example}
19. Your hair always looks better down than up.
20. Do things before you're asked.
21. Always start with a clean kitchen {especially if you're a messy cook}
22. Don't underestimate the power of please.
